How senior leaders can lead on making the school Anti-Racist
There are many steps that can be taken in order to create an
inclusive and anti-racist learning environment for ethnically
diverse students. Here is a list of just a few things to consider
when discussing how to create and implement learning
environments that are inclusive:
• Analyse the values and policies that are set in place within
your school to promote diversity and fairness.
• Encourage both ethnic staff and students to be able to
perform at their best in a comfortable environment that
acknowledges and supports difference.
• Demonstrate that you have faith in the ability of all of your
students regardless of their backgrounds.
• Teach students to create a supportive environment with
each other.
• Allow students to be more open with sharing their lived
experiences.
• Recognise the unconscious and conscious bias that you have
as an individual.
• Examine your assumptions.
• Think of diverse examples to provide for students.
• Examine your curriculum.
• Pay attention to your language.
• Do not generalise groups of students.
• Commit to practicing inclusive classroom behaviours.
Because the relationship between teacher and student is a social
act that is ingrained into society, it is important to be aware of
the social and emotional dynamics that carry this bond. A teacher
directly impacts the learning development of children, the
performance and set the stage for creating a productive and
inclusive environment.
