How the curriculum should be racially competent
The lives of ethnically diverse individuals should be embedded in
the design, delivery, assessment, and evaluation of all subjects.
The teaching and learning aspects of school should be used to
challenge racism, embed more cultural inclusion into their
classrooms, and acknowledge the differences within each person.
There is a need to question what is being taught in our
classrooms. Knowledge should be obtained from multiple
perspectives with the intention of presenting people from
different backgrounds. The lived experiences of ethnically diverse
individuals are equally as important as White individuals.
Having a diverse curriculum allows all students to have a wider
sense of belonging within academia, which directly heightens the
engagement of those students.
It is important to demonstrate that you understand the
importance of being an Ally to ethnically diverse students and
staff by:
• Empathising with the need to relate to academia that
highlights their diversity
• Ensuring that your curriculum is inclusive of all backgrounds
and individuals
• Increasing the visibility of ethnically diverse individuals in
school
Learning from a cultural lens is important for all students to gain
a broad perspective of life. Education has influence over the
perceptions and beliefs of everyone, so as educators, it is
important that ethnically diverse students are able to learn and
develop with the ideas of individuals that have similar
backgrounds.
