Public Sector Equality Duty
Schools have obligations under the Equality Act 2010 as
employers and bodies that carry out public functions and are
service providers to make sure that pupils are protected against
discrimination and harassment based on their protected
characteristics.
The Equality Act 2010 provides a modern, single legal framework,
and a clearer, more streamlined law that will be more effective at
tackling disadvantage and discrimination.
Using the Equality Act 2010 as a framework, allows schools to
have a strong equality, diversity, and inclusion policy that sets out
your commitment to developing an inclusive and supportive
learning environment for pupils and staff. Avoiding discrimination
and promoting equality supports the agenda of improving
attainment and progression for all pupils.
Policy is a great tool that sets the stage for how you envision your
organisation operate around equality, diversity, and inclusion
goals. These policies should have a list of procedures that explain:
• the roles and responsibilities of each member within your
school system.
• what actions are being implemented to train, develop, and
educate all staff on the proper equality, diversity, and
inclusion practices.
• the process to report and punish those who unlawfully
discriminate.
• how to combat against bullying, harassment, and
victimisation.
