Fireside Chat with Dr Patrick Vernon

Courageous conversations about Race

Thursday 13th October, 10.00 am to 2.00 pm

We really need to talk

  • Talk without judgement
  • Listen to understand
  • Listen to learn
  • Listen to empathise - not to reply or minimise
  • COMMIT YOURSELF TO CHANGE

Sharing information that you know will be uncomfortable for the recipient to hear is not always easy, but dodging the issue is not the answer

This course provides guidance to enable delegates to deliver clear messages and ensure that good relationships are maintained and strengthened.

Delegates will learn useful techniques to get their message across more comfortably and skillfully and also listen to understand, learn and to empathise rather than listening solely to judge, minimise or reply.

The cost for the event is £95

Overview

Sharing information that you know will be uncomfortable for the recipient to hear is not always easy, but dodging the issue is not the answer

This course provides guidance to enable delegates to deliver clear messages and ensure that good relationships are maintained and strengthened.

Delegates will learn useful techniques to get their message across more comfortably and skillfully and also listen to understand, learn and to empathise rather than listening solely to judge, minimise or reply.

Aims

It may be uncomfortable for the time we are together, but we will aim to:

  • Help all who attend to negotiate the conversation about race
  • Give confidence to talk openly in a safe space about race
  • Unlock meaning and potential
  • Provoke a shift in our minds
  • Move away from ignorance/discrimination and the belief that we understand without experience
  • Transform your life and your practice
  • Provide opportunities to ask questions

Content

  • Why courageous conversations matter
  • Approaching every conversation with confidence
  • Being an effective messenger of difficult messages
  • Listening respectfully/fairly
  • Creating an atmosphere of support and trust to ensure messages are clearly delivered/received
  • Work through emotions
  • Respond rather than react defensively
  • Individual needs versus organisational needs
  • Some useful strategies and questions
  • Applying your skills to your current workplace situations

Our Approach: A Fireside Chat

A fireside chat is a personal and interactive discussion involving Dr Vernon and guests, allowing you, the audience to gain insights into Dr Vernon’s personal stories and thoughts on race related topics.

What to expect:

  • Question and answer format, making you think about the questions being asked. By answering these questions during the conversation, Dr Vernon will impart useful information to you.
  • The Chat will be interactive bringing you into the conversation at every opportunity and allowing you to direct the conversation.
  • We will also set aside time for a question-and-answer session.
  • We ask that you send questions in advance and we can go over these questions on the day.
