Protected Characteristics
The nine characteristics protected by the Equality Act 2010. It
is unlawful for employers, and others, to discriminate against
people based on these characteristics. The nine protected
characteristics are: age; sex; pregnancy and maternity; sexual
orientation; gender reassignment; race; religion or belief;
marriage and civil partnership; and disability.
Structural Inequality
The condition in which one category of people have an
unequal status in relation to others. It is structural
because this unequal status is perpetuated and reinforced
by the historically- conditioned differential allocation of
societal, economic and political roles, rights, resources
and opportunities.
Unconscious Bias
A bias that we are unaware of and which happens outside of
our control. It is a bias that happens automatically and is
triggered by our brain making quick judgments and
assessments of people and situations, influenced by our
background, cultural environment and personal experiences.
Xeno-racism
A non-colour-coded racism which is directed specifically
towards people perceived to be foreign on the basis of
their status as migrants, cultural differences or religious
practices.
