Case Study 1: Autism in a Black Male Teenager
Background
Patient: Michael, a 14-year-old Black male
Condition: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Presenting Concerns: Social withdrawal, repetitive behaviours, and
difficulty with verbal communication.
Challenges
• Cultural Misunderstandings: Healthcare providers often
misinterpret cultural expressions of behaviour, mistaking cultural
norms for behavioural issues.
• Lack of Representation: Few healthcare staff share Michael's
cultural background, leading to insufficient culturally relevant
support.
Intervention
1. Initial Assessment:
o Comprehensive history taking with attention to cultural
context.
o Involvement of a cultural liaison or interpreter to facilitate
communication.
2. Personalised Care Plan:
o Engaging a culturally competent multidisciplinary team.
o Using culturally sensitive tools and methods for assessment
and therapy.
o Incorporating the family’s cultural practices and beliefs into
care plans.
3. Family Engagement:
o Providing education on autism that respects cultural
perspectives.
o Facilitating support groups for Black families dealing with
autism.
4. Training for Staff:
o Implementing cultural competency training programmes.
