Case Study 1: Autism in a Black Male Teenager

            Background
Patient: Michael, a 14-year-old Black male

            Condition: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Presenting Concerns: Social withdrawal, repetitive behaviours, and

            difficulty with verbal communication.

            Challenges
                • Cultural Misunderstandings: Healthcare providers often

misinterpret cultural expressions of behaviour, mistaking cultural
                    norms for behavioural issues.
                • Lack of Representation: Few healthcare staff share Michael's

cultural background, leading to insufficient culturally relevant
                    support.

            Intervention

                1. Initial Assessment:

o Comprehensive history taking with attention to cultural
                           context.

o Involvement of a cultural liaison or interpreter to facilitate
                           communication.

o Engaging a culturally competent multidisciplinary team.
o Using culturally sensitive tools and methods for assessment

                           and therapy.
o Incorporating the family’s cultural practices and beliefs into

                           care plans.

                3. Family Engagement:
o Providing education on autism that respects cultural

                           perspectives.
o Facilitating support groups for Black families dealing with

                           autism.

                4. Training for Staff:
