Trainer notes
• GYPSY ACCEPTABLE BUT USE WITH CAUTION: There are many
different Traveller communities and many would not describe
themselves as Gypsies.
• English Gypsies and Scottish Gypsy / Travellers are distinct
ethnic groups and must be distinguished from Irish Travellers,
New Travellers, Show and Fairground people, Boat people and
Roma.
• The term originated in the 1600’s in the mistaken belief that
the Romany nomadic people to whom it was applied were
originally Egyptian, when they were actually of north Indian
descent.
• Gypsy, Roma and Travellers or GRT is a shorthand umbrella
term that can be used when referring generically to all of the
different Traveller communities.
