• ASIAN ACCEPTABLE BUT USE WITH CAUTION: Geographically
confusing since it ought to include the Chinese, but in common
usage it does not.
• Probably for this reason ‘South Asian’ has been increasingly used to
refer to those originating in the Indian sub-continent, who come
from several distinct regions in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
• For a while it was generally accepted by the people concerned,
unless used in a context where the many differences between
‘Asian’ groups ought to be recognised, in which case it would be
taken for ignorance at worst.
• Many people often prefer identification by country, for example
Indian, Bangladeshi, Pakistani.
• Some British born people with Asian heritage may use British Asian.
