A Tribute to the Windrush Generation

On Windrush Day, we gather near and far,
To celebrate the journeys that set a rising star.

From distant lands, across the waves they came,

To rebuild a nation, they changed the game.

HMT Empire Windrush, a symbol so bold,

               Carrying dreams and stories untold.

From Jamaica’s shores to Trinidad's embrace,
They sought new beginnings, a future to chase.

In '48, they stepped on Tilbury’s land,

With hope in their hearts and a helping hand.

They built our cities, from London to Leeds,

With strength and resilience, planting seeds.

Not just African-Caribbeans, but many more,
18,000 Asians, their stories we explore.

From Kenya, Uganda, with courage they sailed,

1500 Black people, whose spirits prevailed.

Despite the signs of "No Dogs, No Blacks,"

They stood tall; they didn't turn back.

In Clapham’s shelter, they found their first home,
In a country where they’d often feel alone.

Yet they thrived, through trials they soared,

Their spirit unbroken, their legacy adored.

In hospitals and buses, in factories they toiled,

Their labour and love, our nation oiled.
