P. 3
Foreword
Everyone in a workplace should have a positive experience.
Employees should feel safe to express themselves and their
identities without fear of being judged or harassed in the
workplace. This includes staff at every level within the organisation.
All individuals that interact with an organisation, staff, or
customers, should believe that an organisation supports their
identity. The workplace should be free from racism, subtle acts of
exclusion (S.A.E.), prejudice, and other barriers to having a safe
environment.
It is important for organisations to understand the impact that
racism has on an ethnically diverse individual.
Almost 15% of ethnically diverse women and 8% of ethnically
diverse men stated that racial discrimination has caused them to
leave their jobs.
Statistics like these should lead organisations to commit to
proactively developing anti-racist strategies within their
workplaces.
This pocketbook looks at the impact of racism on ethnically diverse
staff in the workplace. There is a clear absence of ethnically diverse
people in leaderships roles across various industries in the UK,
which demonstrates the need for more inclusive recruitment and
selection policies, processes, procedures, practices, and people
development within the workplace.
We hope that this resource helps staff/leaders to raise their
awareness, knowledge and understanding around supporting
racially diverse staff within their organisations.
