How Does Racism Affect the Workplace?
Racism in the workplace can manifest itself in a variety of ways;
stereotyping, Subtle Acts of Exclusion, inappropriate remarks, jokes.
Ethnically diverse individuals in the workplace can feel the effects
of bias and racism and the impact can affect their well-being and
mental health. Here are a few statistics to better understand the
experiences of ethnically diverse staff in the UK workforce:
• Over 70% of ethnically diverse workers say that they have
experienced racial harassment at work in the last five years
• Around 60% say that they have been subjected to unfair
treatment by their employer because of their ethnicity
• Unemployment rates higher for ethnically diverse individuals
(12.9% compared with 6.3% for White people)
• Ethnically diverse workers with degrees earn, on average,
23.1% less than White workers
• In Britain, significantly lower percentages of ethnically
diverse people (8.8%) work as managers, directors, and
senior officials, compared with White people (10.7%)
These statistics demonstrate that anti-racist training is still a topic
of discussion that needs to be addressed in the workplace.
Providing anti-racist skills development for staff/management
will allow them to develop a better understanding of racism, how
is occurs in the workplace, how to address/speak up about it, and
how to further increase their knowledge/practice on effectively
dealing with it.
Because racial injustice and inequality is very apparent in our
society and workplace, it is important to address the topic of
racism and develop a zero-tolerance approach to combatting
racism and discrimination in the workplace.
