The Impact of Discriminatory Language and Behaviour

                • Discriminatory language/behaviour impacts children's

and young people's wellbeing and can affect their

                    participation, attainment and inclusion, also

preventing them from realising their rights.

                • Discriminatory language/behaviour of any kind is

unacceptable and must be addressed quickly.

                • Discriminatory language/behaviour should never be
accepted as a typical part of

                    communication/relationships or development.

                • Discriminatory language/behaviour can harm people

physically or emotionally, with an impact that can

                    endure into later life.

                • The actual language/behaviour may or may not be

repeated, but the threat can be sustained over time

                    through actions, looks, messages, confrontations,

physical interventions, or the fear of these.

                • Discriminatory language/behaviour may be a result of

prejudice that relates to perceived or actual

                    differences.

                • This can lead to behaviour and language that could

manifest into racism, sexism, homophobia, biphobia,

transphobia or prejudice and discrimination towards

                    disability or faith.
