• Some groups of people are at particular risk of
experiencing discrimination motivated by prejudice
against one or more of the protected characteristics
covered by the Equality Act 2010.
• Prejudice is a social problem and is not limited to
education providers, however learning providers can
contribute to social change and assist to prepare
children and young people for society in which we live
and work.
• In order to thrive and achieve their full potential,
children and young people need learning
environments which are safe, nurturing, respectful,
and free from fear, abuse and discrimination.
• Any child or young person who is viewed by others as
being part of a minority group is at risk of experiencing
discrimination.
• This can happen regardless of how they view their
own identity.
• Discrimination, harassment or victimisation is not a
result of the ethnicity, sexuality, gender etc. of the
person being discriminated against, harassed or
victimised, but a result of the attitudes of the person
displaying the discriminatory language/ behaviour.
• Experiencing discriminatory language/behaviour can
have a negative effect on the health and wellbeing of
young people and of those around them.
