Schools: Good Practice
• Identify an equality champion in the senior leadership team and
amongst the governors.
• Have you got a Student Voice group or EDI Champions? This
group should be representative of the students in your school,
college or university and therefore encourage BAME students to
share their views on the running of their institution.
• Ensure there is an up to date strategic equality plan, produced
after full consultation amongst the stakeholders.
• Provide training for all staff and governors which should be
reinforced through the staff appraisal system. Providing training
for all staff and governors should then be reinforced through the
staff appraisal system. For example, Conscious and Unconscious
Bias Training.
• Monitor regularly, equality report findings and review processes
and systems as necessary.
• Equality and Diversity Fund: for School-led projects. Schools
who would like to apply for funding for an individual project
should apply directly to the regional hub lead school. These
schools have obtained a grant to help them increase the
diversity of senior leadership teams in England’s schools.
Teachers who would like to apply for a place on a project should
contact their regional hub lead school to find out which schools
are taking part. (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/equality-and-
diversity-funding-for-school-led-projects#apply)
• Commitment by senior leaders to advance and embed race
equality at every level.
• Work with the local population to improve relationships with the
