Race Equality: Colleges

In 2018/19 AOC report UK colleges have 25% of 16- 18-year-old
BAME students and 32% of BAME Adult students. The UK has as a

national strategy to improve and increase diversity in our colleges
so that they are representative of society. This isn’t only important

for society but essential for economic and mental wellbeing.

That progress should be determined by talent and not socio-
economic background. Colleges need to develop strategies for

retaining BAME learners. This involves ensuring that once in college

students get the support they need to stay in college and move on

to university/work. In addition, they should realise that it isn’t just
enough to get more students into college but to ensure that they

have equal access to jobs/university when they leave.

This section focuses on the current statistical position of BAME

students in further education colleges and on apprenticeships, as well
as common issues faced. This section will introduce best practice

tools for college leaders, teachers/lecturers and support staff.
