Current Educational Statistics - What we know
(Ethnicity Facts and Figures gov.uk 2016/17 unless otherwise
stated):
1. Between 2002/3 and 2016/17, the percentage of people in
further education who were from the Asian, Black, Mixed and
Other ethnic groups combined increased from 13.3% to 20.5%.
2. People from White ethnic groups made up 77.7% of those in
further education.
3. Overall students achieving 3 A grades or better at A Level was
13.4% – 76% of these were White, 12% were Asian, 5% were
Black, 5% had Mixed ethnicity, 1% were from the Chinese
ethnic group, and 2% were from the Other ethnic group.
4. The Department for Education and the National Apprenticeship
Service have announced a new pilot project called ‘Five Cities
Project’ with the support of all Metro Mayors in a bid increase
BAME Apprentices across the country. The five cities focused
within the project are Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol,
Leicester and London. This follows the Government’s pledge to
increase BAME Apprenticeships by 20% by 2020.
5. BAME Apprenticeships have been on the rise. The latest figures
from the Government show that 55,000 apprentices came from
BAME backgrounds – 3% increase from the previous academic
year. BAME Apprentices themselves make up 10.5% of the total
apprenticeship starts.
6. Is this about a lack of interest in apprenticeships? No, the
analysis of the government’s, Find an Apprenticeship website,
shows that people from BAME backgrounds make up 19 per
cent of all applications – i.e., they are over-represented in
applications – but have a much lower success rate. White
apprenticeship applicants are twice as likely to succeed in their
application than BAME applicants.
