Race Equality Colleges; Good Practice
• Identify an equality champion in the senior leadership team and
amongst the governors.
• Ensure there is an up to date strategic equality plan, produced
after full consultation amongst the stakeholders.
• Provide training for all staff and governors which should be
reinforced through the staff appraisal system.
• Monitor regularly, equality report findings and review processes
and systems as necessary.
• Commitment by senior leaders to advance and embed race
equality at every level.
• All staff, pastoral, administrative and academic, need to be
equipped with the skills and confidence to build relationships
with all students; in particular clear and specific guidance and
training for personal tutors should be put in place. Staff should
make sure that students understand exactly what is expected of
them – in relation to academic behaviours, participation and the
production of work.
• Providing training for all staff and governors which should then
be reinforced through the staff appraisal system. For example,
Conscious and Unconscious Bias Training.
• Have you got a Student Voice group or EDI Champions? This
group should be representative of the students in your school,
college or university and therefore encourage BAME students to
share their views on the running of their institution.
• Work with the local population to improve relationships with the
community.
• Provide the opportunity for parents to improve their literacy and
numeracy skills where necessary.
