Page 17 - Anti-Racism Pocketbook for Schools
P. 17
It is good practice for schools to make sure that all pupils are
aware how to complain if they see racial inequality occurring in
their schools. When having these difficult conversations, it is
important to:
• Be aware of the fact that this racism can be very subtle, and
it can be difficult to provide explicit examples of their
experience.
• Do not downplay the seriousness of this students experience
or their feeling, because racism should continuously be
treated as a normal behaviour in our society.
• After a student has confided in you, notify the appropriate
person to handle these situations in accordance with your
school policy.
• Always check in with the student that reported this
behaviour and reassure them that your school does not
tolerate any form of bullying.
It is important to understand that if a student discusses that they
feel as though they are being treated unfairly in their learning
environments, you are able to respond with compassion and
provide a safe space for them to do so.
