Case Study

Julie is a Muslim woman working as a sales representative. One

day while working, her manager says that hats are not allowed to
be worn while at work. Julie explains that her hijab is not a hat

and it is a veil that she wears due to her faith. Her manager

agrees to let her continue to wear the hijab. However, she is

constantly bombarded with questions about her appearance and

            her customs.

Is Julie a victim of racism?

Yes, Julie is a victim of racial harassment and subtle acts of

            exclusion.

Why is this a case of racism?

Firstly, the “no hats” stipulation can unfairly effect individuals

that wear headscarves and other head items due to their cultural,

religious, and/or personal customs. A rule such as this can
            unfairly exclude communities of people.

Secondly, after forcibly announcing her faith – Julie was

bombarded with questions relating her faith. This can be

extremely upsetting as it is not up to Julie to educate her
            colleagues on her faith.

            What should this business do?

                • All staff should take diversity training.

                • Dress code policy needs to be reviewed.

                • The business needs to ensure that managers are aware of
                   different religious customs.
