Teachers may use racist incidents in the
classroom as a learning opportunity, to
encourage young people to discuss and
challenge stereotypical assumptions or
inappropriate behaviour.
TACKLING When the language or behaviour in question
is not directed at anyone in particular and is
INCIDENTS unlikely to personally impact a class
member, this may be useful.
However, teachers should also be aware of
the sensitivities. Someone may feel singled
out by the incident. Using it to educate
others can make them feel humiliated and
compound the impact of the incident.
