The Equality Act 2010 provides a modern, single legal
framework, and a clearer, more streamlined law that will be
more effective at tackling disadvantage and discrimination.
Using the Equality Act 2010 as a framework, allows schools to
have a strong equality, diversity, and inclusion policy that sets
out your commitment to developing an inclusive and
supportive learning environment for students and staff.
Avoiding discrimination and promoting equality supports the
agenda of improving attainment and progression for all pupils.
Policy is a great tool that sets the stage for how you envision
your organisation operate around equality, diversity, and
inclusion goals. These policies should have a list of
procedures that explain:
• the roles and responsibilities of each member within
your school system.
• what actions are being implemented to train, develop,
and educate all staff on the proper equality, diversity,
and inclusion practices.
• the process to report and punish those who unlawfully
discriminate.
• how to combat against bullying, harassment, and
victimisation.
As shown above, a strong policy is able to be a reference that
everyone within an organisation is able to look back on and
have an idea on what they can do moving forward. Whether
it be to understand the values of the company or how to
report racist behaviour, it should provide a starting point for
all staff and students to understand.
