This should not be viewed as a determent to the learning
environment at school. Although there might not be direct
involvement, ethnically diverse parents tend to have more
subtle types of parental involvement like having high
expectations for their children’s education.
By having faith in a child’s ability and communicating about
their academic journey, children are able to internalise this
positive approach and increase their confidence in their
ability and academic achievement.
Encouraging attitude and behaviour change
It is important to recognise that behaviour is important to
the success of everyone within the school environment due
to the impact it has on health, wellbeing, and productivity.
So, how can schools encourage positive attitude and
behaviour change? Here are a few helpful tips:
• Staff and students should lead by example.
• By setting a positive stance against racism, this will
encourage and motivate colleagues and students to
mimic this behaviour.
• Staff and students should communicate effectively.
• By communicating your expectations when it comes to
being anti-racist and socially aware, an understanding of
the type of behaviour you expect from your students
and colleagues is set.
• Staff and students should attend training.
By attending different social and training events on the topic
of race, it is important to listen and educate yourself while
having a safe environment to do so.
