Race Equality: Universities

Universities need to develop strategies for recruiting and retaining

BAME learners. In addition, they should realise that it isn’t just
enough to get more students into university but to ensure that they

have equal access to careers advice or further postgraduate study

ready for when their course is finished.

Racial inequalities are a significant issue within higher education but

are not necessarily overt, isolated incidents. UK higher education
cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents

of the whole population and until individuals from all ethnic
backgrounds can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords.

When developing solution to racial inequalities, it is important that

they are long-term institutional culture changes (Equality Challenge
            Unit’s ‘Race Equality Charter’).

This section focuses on the current statistical position of BAME

students in higher education, as well as common issues faced. This

section will introduce best practice tools for university leaders,
            lecturers and support staff.
