if they fail to tackle ethnic disparities among students, and in
staff recruitment and research, as part of an initiative

Race Equality University; Good Practice
• Identify an equality champion in the senior leadership team and
amongst the governors.
• Ensure there is an up to date strategic equality plan, produced
after full consultation amongst the stakeholders.
• Providing training for all staff and governors which should then
be reinforced through the staff appraisal system. For example
Conscious and Unconscious Bias Training.
• All staff, pastoral, administrative and academic, need to be
equipped with the skills and confidence to build relationships
with all students; in particular clear and specific guidance and
training for personal tutors should be put in place. Staff should
make sure that students understand exactly what is expected of
them – in relation to academic behaviours, participation and the
production of work.
