• New research from the University and College union (2019)

states that Black female professors face bullying and

discrimination. They report being repeatedly overlooked for
promotion, regularly confused for administrative staff and

unsupported by other colleagues, including other women.

            • Universities’ prized league table positions may be under threat
if they fail to tackle ethnic disparities among students, and in

staff recruitment and research, as part of an initiative

                  announced by the government.

            • The Office for Students (OFS regulates higher education in
England) has developed a website for those applying to

university, with a focus on encouraging applications from those

who are less likely to go on to higher education.

            • Identify an equality champion in the senior leadership team and
                  amongst the governors.

            • Ensure there is an up to date strategic equality plan, produced

after full consultation amongst the stakeholders.

            • Providing training for all staff and governors which should then
be reinforced through the staff appraisal system. For example

                  Conscious and Unconscious Bias Training.

            • All staff, pastoral, administrative and academic, need to be
equipped with the skills and confidence to build relationships

with all students; in particular clear and specific guidance and

training for personal tutors should be put in place. Staff should

make sure that students understand exactly what is expected of
them – in relation to academic behaviours, participation and the

                  production of work.
