It is important to understand that if a student reports that
they feel as though they are being treated unfairly or a victim
of racial bullying, staff have an obligation to ensure that they
have protection against victimisation as well.
According to the Equality Act of 2010, victimisation is defined
as: treating someone badly because they have made a
claim/allegation of discrimination or are helping someone
else to make a claim by giving evidence or information.
Recording and monitoring racist behaviour
When dealing with racist behaviour, it is important to self-
evaluation framework to make improvements. This self-
evaluation framework can include:
• Implementing an ongoing cycle of monitoring by
analysing reports and data from this. Data should be
accurately collected on forms.
• Using this data to decide what the main priorities are for
the school to improve. If incidents are not accurately
collected then it is difficult for schools to see the trends
occurring.
• When you can visibly see what your main priorities
should be, it is time to take action to ensure that this
cycle of improvement continues.
Employees and pupils within the educational system should
be aware of the policies and procedures in place on how to
report discrimination taking place.
