Racist bullying can have impact on a student’s sense of
belonging to the school community, their physical and
mental health, their attendance, and their educational
attainment. This behaviour must always be challenged in
order to build a respectful and inclusive classroom
environment.
Responding to racist bullying, harassment, victimisation
In order to respond to racist bullying, harassment,
victimisation, it is good practice to make sure that all parents
and students are aware and have access to the complaint’s
procedure. This way, everyone is aware of how this type of
situation will be addressed in accordance with school policy.
If you are presented with a case of racial bullying, it is
important to:
• Stay calm to avoid any further conflict between the
parties involved when confronting the behaviour.
• Be aware of the fact that this racist bullying might be
very subtle, and it can be difficult to provide explicit
examples of their experience.
• Do not downplay the seriousness of this students experience
or their feeling, because racism should continuously be
treated as a normal behaviour in our society.
• After a student has confided in you, notify the
appropriate person to handle these situations in
accordance with your school policy.
• Always check in with the student that reported this
behaviour and reassure them that your school does not
tolerate any form of bullying.
