P. 14
Foster good race relationships
Tell others (including learners) about your race equality
commitment/agenda and why it is important.
Create a non-threatening, social environment where
discriminatory racist behaviour – whether overt, covert or
based on ignorance – is not tolerated.
Arrange tasks and seating so that learners and others mix with
each other to create a more integrated group.
Identify opportunities for using race, faith, culture and
customs-related contexts to explain points or set tasks.
Draw attention to the use of racial stereotypes and point out
how inaccurate they are.
Speak out against racist jokes and slurs targeting
characteristics protected by law and others that are not.
Challenge off the cuff discriminatory remarks, even if they are
not aimed at anyone in the group and do not affect or offend
anyone present.
Ensure learners and others understand why racist behaviour
that may be deemed acceptable within their family and/or
social circle (and even your own) is not acceptable within the
learning/working environment.
